Hounds Hill Shopping Centre, Blackpool

A 1970's shopping centre refubishment and extension to accommodate Debenhams as the anchor store to revitalise the shopping centre, as part of the regeneration of central Blackpool.

The existing shopping centre was built in the early to mid 1970´s, consisting of ground floor mall with a multi storey car park above.

The site has been the subject of many expansion proposals, having recently been purchased by Modus Developments in Manchester. They appointed Balfour Beatty Construction Northern Ltd (BBCNL) as their main Contractor under a Design and Build form of Contract. The project consists of demolition of part of the existing centre whilst both the centre and car park are operational. To then provide additional retail space, an extended mall and a new anchor store at the end of the new mall for Debenhams, over 3 levels with a substantial secant walled basement. The project value is approximately £33m with a project duration of 24 months. A significant proportion of the work is dependant on completion of a new public staircase. Mascot were appointed by BBCNL, to provide design management and coordination services, the lead in to the project and procurement programme was exceedingly tight, with the team being put in place in those early weeks.  As a result the role also included a significant amount of project management duties.

Our duties were concluded after 6 months, at a time when the bulk of the procurement of the packages had been completed and works on site were well underway.
