Honeywell House for Barnsley College

Honeywell House is a new knowledge hub for renewable energies and sustainable construction for Barnsley College.

Barnsley College have applied for ERDF funding towards a new renewable energy and sustainable construction building to provide practical demonstrations for their students and act as a knowledge hub for SME´s within the region to show how their carbon and energy usage can be reduced in new and existing buildings.

Mascot were appointed as Project Managers following a competition and commenced Stage C in May 2009. Following outline approval from ERDF, Stage D commenced in January 2010. A final approval is now awaited and a planning consent has been granted.

The technologies and construction methods that are being used in the building include:

  • Solar heating
  • Biomass heating
  • Sun pipes
  • Passive ventilation
  • Evaporative coolers
  • Ground source heat pumps
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Wind turbines
  • Straw bale construction
  • High thermal resistance clay blocks
  • Green roof

Mascot's role has included the co-ordination of the multi disciplinary design team, liaising with Yorkshire Forward on the ERDF application and developing a project strategy to address the project constraints.
